It’s you party and you can have wine if you want to! And why not? If you love wine and it’s your birthday, then it’s only natural you pair the two. Pairing wine with sweets may be tricky, so here we are to make all your birthday dreams come true.Just like you wouldn’t settle for just any cake for your special day, don’t settle for whatever wine you may have on hand.

If your go-to birthday cake is chocolate, you have many delicious choices!  For a successful pairing, you should note the sweetness of your chocolate. For sweet milk chocolate, try something sweet as well. You may be enjoy the pairing of Vino Santo. This Italian dessert wine, unique to Tuscany, is a full bodied sweet wine, with flavors of hazelnut, caramel and honey. If your cake is darker and less sweet, you will be happy with a more robust and less sweet wine, like a Chianti.

For all you Red Velvet lovers, try it with Port. While you may be thinking that a sweet cake may not go well with a sweet wine, think again! Choose a Tawny Port, which will be dryer than a classic Port and therefore create a better balance of sweetness. Where the sweetness may be slighter, the pair will intensify it, creating perfect harmony. Another great possibility is Merlot, the cherrier, the better!

If you’re more vanilla, and there’s nothing wrong with that, we suggest you try a late-harvest white wine like Gewürztraminer or an American Riesling. These are great compliments to the light, sweet and buttery flavors of the vanilla cake. If you prefer a sweeter compliment, go with the Gewürztraminer, but if you prefer a dryer pairing, do the American Riesling all day!

For all you citrus lovers, there may be nothing better than a Lemon Cake with a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio. Pinot Grigios have great citrusy notes, which complement the lemon cake whitout overpowering it. Another notable pairing is Sauvignon Blanc. Try a New Zealand variety; the tart and crisp wine reinforces the cake flavors while perfectly cutting the lemon’s acidity.

Well, there you have it. Who said you couldn’t have your cake and eat it too! Eat and drink up, after all, it’s your special day!
